Local family database Soltau-Walsrode

The database includes persons from the area around Soltau between Celle and Fallingbostel. It is NOT a complete Ortsfamilienbuch (local family history book) but rather a collection of data by Mr. William Hebenbrock, who took information from the sources listed below.

Unfortunately there are no exact places given for many of these entries. According to E.H. Paetzold's 'Gazeteer of Parishes and Places in the German Empire Numbering Over 50 Inhabitants' (Bischofswerda, 1901) in the city of Soltau there were 4025 persons listed in the 1895 census.

In the alphabetical index one should consider the continuous evolution of family names. For example, check both 'Offensand' and 'Auf dem Sande,' Frieling and 'von Frieling.' Names may have a 'zum' 'zu' 'von' 'vom' or 'auf der' preceding them.
Often variations of family names were reduced to one basic form.

Data was assembled by Wilhelm Hebenbrock. Please send inquiries, corrections and additions of this data to:
Dieter Fritzsch ( )

  • The Lutheran churchbooks of Soltau, which begin with baptism, marriages and burials in the year 1650. There are gaps from 1667 to 1669, and from 1680 until about 1760 the churchbooks were kept in a very incomplete manner.
  • German lineage books, especially Volumes 76 and 131, available in the State Archives of Bremen (reading room) or in the University of Bremen's library.
  • Local literature pertaining to the history of the area, specifically books about the places Krelingen, Neuenkirchen, Wietzendorf, and the families Brelje and Drewes - and families of Soltau.
  • It also contains contributions from other researchers who have worked with Mr. Hebenbrock in the last 10 years.
  • Obituaries were also used in the collection of information for this database.
