Local heritage book of Krasna

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Krasna, in 1938

This family book is a tribute to the former Catholic residents of Krasna, district of Akkerman, Bessarabia, Odessa Oblast, Russia.

The village was founded in 1814 by colonists from the Duchy of Warsaw. Their ethnic affiliations were German and Polish.

The Germans had immigrated to the Warsaw, Poland area from about 1788 to 1814. The regions of origin of some of the German families
have been identified. Most of the families came from Baden-Württemberg, Lower Alsace, the Electoral Palatinate and the Saar area.

Krasna is called the mother colony. In later years as the population increased and the shortage of land forced some residents to migrate again.
Daughter colonies were founded. These include Emmental, Larga, and Balmas in Russia and Karamurat in Romania. There have also been
waves of emigration from Krasna and its daughter colonies to Argentina, Chile, Brasil, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, England and Italy.

This family book lists the group of people living in Krasna from 1814 to 1940. As far as is known, the ancestors of the colonists are also listed in their original places of origin. The connection to the migrations to the daughter colonies, the Dobrogea and overseas is also illustrated.

The publication usually ends with persons born in the last 100 years.

Thanks are due to the previous researchers who have diligently collected and preserved genealogical material. It is to their credit that we have such good baseline data for the Krasna residents. Those on whose shoulders we stand are:

  • Melchior Koch, Koblenz, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany
  • Paul Wingenbach, Polch, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany
  • Eduard Volk, Neuwied, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany
  • Ted J. Becker, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

There are many others who have been instrumental in gathering and preserving the history of Krasna.
Thank you to them!

Our data collection is hosted online in a data center near Frankfurt/Main, Germany. We want our genealogical work to be preserved. Otto Riehl's executor is instructed to supervise the following:

For the data collection an administrator is directed to update this OFB Krasna one final time and offer the data to the organizations GRHS, PRFK and WGfF.

If anyone should find errors or can add family data, we are grateful for their help.
